Ok. This is going to be a little tricky.
First, go to Start - Run, type "cmd" without the brackets and hit enter. A command prompt window will appear. Over there type "ipconfig /all". Look for your network card information. Especially look for "DHCP Enabled". If it says "yes", there is no need to write down the settings. If it says No, then write down all settings. Now, in most cases it will be dhcp enabled...
If you have dhcp enabled: yes, go to the next step. If not, go to control panel - network connection - right click on your network connection and go to properties, go to internet protocol tcp/ip, click properties, write down all settings including ip address, gateway, dns, etc. then set both ip address and dns servers to automatic. Click ok. You will eventually get disconnected from the internet. But not to worry, you have your settings written down in case something goes wrong.
Now, disconnect your network cable from your pc.
The Linksys wifi routers come with a blue/yellow network cable and a CD in the box. Connect the network cable that came with the router in one of the router's LAN ports, but NOT in the WAN port. Connect the other end to your pc. Connect your internet cable in the router's WAN port.
Put the linksys cd in the pc and complete all the steps. If you had dhcp enabled = no, you will most likely have to enter your internet settings in the router. The cd will show you how. If you need more help, just send me an e-mail or something.

Sure - I assume you have a hard ethernet connection in your dorm room, just hook the router up to that connection, as if it were the modem, and hook your pc up to one of the hard ethernet connections on the back of the router - that will let you change the wireless security settings in the router. (I recommend you at least change the admin password from 'password' which is the default to something else.) you should not need to cycle the modem, although you may need to update the DNS server addresses in the router (when you have everything hooked up, go to 192.168.1.1 on a browser in your pc, which is the router)... once you have the wireless security where you want it, then you can unplug the pc from the hard connection to the router. If you encrypt the wireless, it keeps some of the less sophisitcated hackers from getting to your PC, as you are inside your own LAN. (if you don't, then anyone within wireless range of your router can get in)....

Get in touch with the dorm facility's IT department. They will help you.
You must have a BIG dorm room if you need Wi Fi... You might want to reconsider setting up your router just yet - a cabled connection is much faster.

simple contact admin and explain you can connect to their modem and it needs to be reset. it will take on 10 seconds to power down and up. So no one will be majorly affected. Dont be scared to ask for what you want in any aspect of life. We need independent thinkers to lead the country not followers. I have faith that you will take us far, good luck.

on your laptop click start, network connections, show all connections.
then go to the network connections (it's somewhere on the side of the page that you opened up.)
then this will show a list of routers in the building along with it's signal strength click on the one with the highest strength and click connect and there you have it.
p.s. if none come up or all have low signal strength or they don't work just keep refreshing it till one comes up and does.
signed,
fries.

Oh a lot of colleges only allow one ip address per student or such and the linksys requires so many or whatever. And a lot of colleges have it blocked where you can't use wireless routers.
