You need to put together a demo tape and send it out to all the record companies you can.
American Idol may seem like some sort of miracle path to celebrity, but there are millions of Americans who "sing very well" who think they have a shot at winning. Good luck to them.
However, the really big singing stars: the Beyonce Knowles, the Alicia Keys, the Mariah Careys, the Dolly Partons and Barbra Streisands (all depends on your taste/generation) of this world DID NOT get where they are by competing in an amateur talent contest. Fame and fortune came to them through sheer hard work, risk-taking and personal sacrifice.
A LOT of our biggest celebrities swept floors and washed dishes to make ends meet before they got their "break", and some had to try and try for years before that first break came. So whatever you do decide to do, don't lose heart. If you have talent, somebody will recognize it at some point, and do something about it.

One of the first things you're gonna need is a "Demo", which
is a professional recording of you singing. The demo has to be
recorded is a studio. I don't know if you're in a band or not,
but you will need some source of back up music when recording
The studio might be able to provide you with some options,
that is something you would have to speak with them about.
Some studios have studio musicians you can hire on an
hourly basis . I'm not certain about a karaoke type situation,
wherein you could get around the live music. If I were you
quite honestly I'd look to join a band (if you're not in one).
This would give you some experience. Once you have it
together a bit, you-all could go to a rehearsal studio. Some
of those studios have like a cassette recorder where they
would throw a blank tape in and record you. They don't
charge for this, at least they didn't when I used to go.
As far as a record deal there are a few things you've got to
have: 1- A Set Of Pipes ( that kick *** ) 2- Quality Demo &
3- Some Good Exposure/ P.R. good luck to you

You don't want a record deal nowadays. The large record labels will own you body and soul, and then kick you to the curb once you're no longer profitable.
Why not record an album on your own, and self-distribute it? The Internet makes that very easy nowadays. You have a lot of different revenues to promote and distribute a disc. (CD Baby, Soundclick, MySpace, etc.)
