It can be on any time period in the history of the world! I'd rather something in more recent times if possible so that I could relate to my characters more. If you could please give some sort of story line that would be great!

Also, I'd rather not write about something sad and/or gorry. I know that that's what life is all about, but I'd rather avoid such a story. Something more optimistic with a good conflict. Thanks!

I have always thought one of the greatest pieces of history centers around the USS Indianapolis.

On July 30, 1945, after completing a top secret mission to deliver parts of the atom bomb "Little Boy," which would be dropped on Hiroshima, the battle cruiser USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained, undetected by the navy, for nearly five days. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to survive, fighting off hypothermia, sharks, physical and mental exhaustion, and, finally, hallucinatory dementia. By the time rescue -- which was purely accidental -- arrived, all but 321 men had lost their lives; 4 more would die in military hospitals shortly thereafter.

The captain's subsequent and highly un usual court-martial left many questions unanswered: How did the navy fail to realize the Indianapolis was missing? Why was the cruiser traveling unescorted in enemy waters? And perhaps most amazing of all, how did these 317 men manage to survive?

I have seen accounts that state the Japanese commander had the Indianapolis in his periscope while the ship was enroute to deliver its atomic bombs, but let the ship go as it was too far away to attack properly. If this is true, what would have been the consequences of sinking the ship while it still carried the atomic bombs? How much longer would the war have lasted? And what of the men who survived the initial torpedoes. How many more coiuld have been saved if the navy had been on the ball?

People are people through the ages; you can relate to them all if you just try.
I think you might have a good story from nearly any aspect of the Civil War. You could write about Lincoln's cabinet and their problems, the regular starving troops, the families with no farms or homes, families who lost the rest of their family by death, or just lost. What happened to black families, particularly the bread winners, young children, teen-age children. Everyone was part of the story, just pick a place to start. You can relate.

I know of a great one--but it has already been done. "The Two Georges," was about how life would have gone if England had won the Revolutionary War. This book was co-authored by actor Richard Dreyfuss.

How about one in which the Kennedy assassination was a hoax--where, feeling people would attempt to kill him, President Kennedy goes into hiding--and still lives.

How about if a different president had been elected? Would we be in Iraq? Would 911 happen? Would gas be cheaper or more expensive? Gay marriage?
