You don't need to use a browser to send an SMS. Text messaging is done by a different part of the phone than which is responsible for web browsing. In fact, many older GSM phones which don't support web browsing at all can send and receive SMS messages no problem. As far as not being able to use it as a modem anymore, I'd check and make sure that the carrier did not shut off their CSD (circuit switched data) circuits on you. With GPRS and EDGE many carriers aren't supporting CSD anymore. They'd rather make more money off of you by forcing you to use GPRS or EDGE and call it a "feature improvement"
