Who can recommend the best, easy plants for Zone 9 climate?

Please keep in mind that it dropped to below 27 here for 7 days straight so it is an odd micro-climate.
Also, I have tried numerous native plants and have a hard time with most of them.

try banana trees, as they love lots of water. also ginger lilies grow well, as do taro, and citrus. and they are all pretty easy maintenance. good luck.
