I have a couple of questions. The automatic transmission is having problems shifting into either 2nd or 3rd gear. The "check transmission" light is on, and the "O/D Off" light is flashing on the control panel. If I take it easy on the gas, is it ok to drive it to the dealer, which is about 10-15 miles away? Has anyone else had problems with their 2002 Mountaineer's transmission?

Checking the transmission fluid is no easy feat w/ this car. It's underneath, and I've gotten under the car and can't find it for the life of me. Ugh. Looks like the majority is saying to tow it.

Pokey, I'm almost insulted! LOL. I know how to check transmission fluid under the hood, but I'm telling ya there's no dipstick underneath the hood. It's a "plug" underneath the car. That's the way these Mountaineers are built.

Well, first of all, there is no dipstick to check the fluid level or condition, it is done thru a plug in the pan, under the truck. If you are also having a concern of the truck slow to engage in reverse, it should be ok to drive to the dealer, but if not, I wouldn't recommend driving it. If you have an extended warranty, or coverage on your insurance, why risk it?
You probably have a concern with the valve body, valve body gasket or solenoid pack, which is internal to the transmission, but not a major repair.
While it is not a major repair (the trans doesn't have to come out) , if I remember right , the parts and labor are around 600-800. this might sound expensive, but a new tranny runs about 4000 if you don't fix the concern.
Hope it helps.....

If you have insurance that covers towing get it towed.

If you feel the need to drive it make sure the transmission fluid level is okay before you drive it.

Personally I would have it towed.

u check the flud under the hood. on trhe passenger side near the back of the eng is a dipstick for the trans. If it's not slipping it should be alright. if the fluid smells burnt then it doesn't really matter at this point cause the trans is already toast.

Maybe it would be just fine, or maybe it would fail and turn into an emergency tow in the middle of the road. Frankly I wouldn't take the chance if I were you. Call the dealer and see if he has someone who does tows for him, have them pick it up and take it in.

if your warranty is over its cheaper to drive it and no it won't hurt anything if you can go slow enough. You say its having trouble shifting into gears but does it shift at all into gear. If its under warrenty just have it towed.

Have someone check the transmission fluid first...

If it were mine, i'd have it towed. Driving it only gives you the chance of doing worse damage.
