The People's Republic of China (PRC) is technically a republic, in the sense that it is not ruled by a monarch. While most westerners probably think of a "republic" as automatically extending voting rights to the people, that is not necessarily the case. Remember the old Soviet Union was formally named the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics," even though the people had no real say in matters of governance. A clarification for one of the other answers: the Republic of China (ROC) is often referred to as Taiwan, the only substantial land area over which it retained control after the Communist PRC drove them from the mainland in 1949. ROC/Taiwan acts as a true democratic nation, despite its lack of international recognition.

The "Republic of China" is what the West more usually identifies as Taiwan, and the "People's Republic of China" is what we usually just call "China"....
It actually says this in the Wiki article I think you were looking at!

the difference between a Republic (Democratic) and a People's Republic (Communist) is about the same as a Jacket and a Straight Jacket
Island Tawain is republic while the mainland is the people's rep.
In mainland China, they have said, "In China, a million people is a small number (after the Tainmein Square masacre - spelt wrong)"

All I know is the territorial nature of the Red Communists and the Hong Kong development after WW II Chang Ki Check who was the leader who freed the ones in favor of Freedom after the Mao Tse Tung takeover, they escaped to Hong Kong and Taiwan. Hong Kong was governed by Great Britain as a providence, with a contract to actually protect them and the territory. Great Britains contract ended I think in 1997? Go to www.history.com and research all there for facts. Hong was taken back by the Chinese of the the Free Peoples however there is no stopping the Communist Red Chinese from taking them over or Taiwan or Korea what so ever. Like I said it is territorial.

the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) is Communist China, the big one. Created after the defeat of the pro-democracy group that fled to Formosa (i believe) and is what Americans now call Taiwan.
