Assuming you want to deter crime with this camera system, you would want a visible camera (or cameras), cables, a time-lapse VCR or single or multi-channel DVR.

With the price of DVR's coming down, you should be able to get a single channel DVR under $200. The camera and cabling will run you $100 or so.

If you are on a tight budget, consider a package deal like this:

At under $400 with four cameras, VCR, monitor and cabling, it's a good deal. There's a lot of companies in this business now, I'm sure you can find one with a one or two camera package if you want to try and save even more (honestly though, the cameras are about $25 each in most budget packages).

You can purchased small( about 1.5 inch square face) color video/audio camera's that have both battery and regular power supply for between 98-120 bucks. the cameras have a 300foot(100yard) range and are very easily concealed if needed. You can also series them together to get even more coverage for your shop that way too! They even work great in RC airplanes!
