The penny was probably introduced into England during the reign of Offa in 757 AD. The origin of the word is uncertain, but may have come from what is today Germany and was Anglicized. Early English pennies are some what scarce and expensive. Now if you actually mean an American cent, the term goes back at least to 1787. Most early colonial coins were and are, just listed as coppers. The Massachusetts 1/2 cent and cent were the first coins bearing the denomination cent, as established by congress.
