The common assumption to make with a question like this is to add the two speeds and halve them. So 993+331= 1324. Divide it by 2, and the average is 662mph, right? WRONG.

For the sake of simplicity. let's say the trip is 993 miles.

The outward journey at 993mph would take an hour. (Time = distance /speed, so 9993/993=1)

The return journey at 331 mph would take 3 hours. (993/331=3)

Speed is calculated by distance divided by time.

The plane has covered a total distance of (2x993) miles in (1+3) hours. That's 1986 miles in 4 hours.

1986 divided by 4 is 496.5 miles per hour average speed.

Spose it cud be 662 mph, (993 + 331) divided by 2.

The question makes no sense.

We discuss the speed at which a plane is travelling.

You then ask what is HIS average speed.

Who is HE. !!!!! Rudolph !!!!!

496.5 is the answer if the question is about Rudolph.
