14 weeks is the earliest by ultrasound. You can find out earlier if you have a amniocentesis. Most drs. will wait until you are about 16 -20 weeks. Most insurance companies like to wait until you are further along. Sometimes though it isn't in the cards. My 2nd had the umbilical cord wrapped around her legs so we couldn't tell. Good Luck! I hope you have a happy, healthy baby!

Generally you have a nuchal fold translucency scan at around 12 weeks. At this scan they are looking for chromosonal abnormalities mainly and normally they won't even attempt to guess the gender as it is still so early. In saying that a friend of mine who had her scans in Hong Kong was told the gender at this scan. Perhaps their technology is more advanced than here in Australia, or perhaps they are just more willing to say.
At your 18-20 week scan they are looking for structural abnormalities and look at baby in a lot of detail. It's at this one that you can generally be told the gender. Sometimes people are unlucky though and baby has it's legs crossed or is turned the wrong way. A really nice ultrasound technician will perservere though and find out for you. Apparently before this scan the genitals are still developing so they can make mistakes, whereas with this one they can be reasonably sure.
Good luck with your pregnancy.

At 20 weeks you can find out. but if you are really impatient you can take an amiosyntesis test but is risky in the early pregnancy so is better to wait up to 20 weeks.

As early as 18 weeks. It is more accurate at 20 weeks but they can give you an 80% guess at 18 weeks.

I found out at 19 weeks and 2 days in an ultrasound. Now, if you want to do a wives tale? LET ME TELL YOU MINE WORKED TOO, ONCE I KNEW IT WAS A BOY I did the needle thing and it worked, they say it if it a girl the needle goes in circles if it is a boy the needle goes sideways and mine went sideways, it was really neat, you put some thread in a needle and hold it above your belly, hold it still and let the needle do its work.
