A good starter car is a reliable small Japanese car with good safety rating. Most SUV's are not a good idea as they do not respond or handle well, apart from a Subaru Forester, which handle as well as any car and better than most. A big car is also not a great idea as they are also difficult to handle in adverse situations. You need a car that will look after you in an emergency. People think a SUV will look after them because they're big, but actually the opposite is true.
A Subaru Forester would be a good compromise for you, being a SUV which handles very well, has all permanent wheel drive which also helps safety and handling, and is very safe and reliable.

I don't think an suv is a good starter car. But if you want to be enviormentally friendly and drive an suv you can get the ford escape hybrid or the toyota highlander hybrid. i think a starter car should be cheap and reliable. but if you can afford a brand new car and the maintence, and insurance, go ahead. Don't forget, if you get a regular suv, lots of gas money.

No, SUV's can be hard to handle in tricky situations (fast braking, ice, wet roads, fast turns, etc) and use a lot of gas. Look for a mid size SUV if you really want something besides a car, and be sure to check out the safety ratings and when you test drive it pay attention to how easy it handles.

If you can afford the gas for an SUV then go for it but also consider that they are not all that safe either, despite the false sense of security people feel in driving them. They don't hold their value either. You'd be better off with a basic Honda or Nissan as your first car.

If you want to be environmentally friendly and have a dependable fuel efficient car, Get a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla. If you want something with AWD try the Subaru Impreza. These choicesare all good on gas and safe.

An SUV is kinda the opposite of good for the environment. If you want something better on the environment a small car like a neon will do better

Well.if you want a SUV I hope your rich -the gas alone will break you!....It being your first car-Did you also know that utility vehicles don't handle like regular passenger vehicles -they are top-heavy & could flip if cornering to quickly! .Why don't you try a Subaru Outback or Legacy!-they are 4-wheel drives & a 5****** crash rating!

Stay away from SUVs pickups and foreign stuff. There all expensive to own and operate. Until you really learn how to drive get a cheap used domestic car.
