Apple can't prevent them from moving forward. Apple can do what it has been successful at...WHEN it has been successful. Apple can keep innovating and stay ahead of the competition.

This is really complex...and Apple, Microsoft, etc. hire brainiacs at six figure salaries to figure this out. The basic concepts are fairly simple though. Pay attention to your customer's needs, develop brand loyalty, keep up the R&D so you have cutting edge innovations with asthetic appeal and lean pricing, have product on hand so customers don't make substitutions (think distribution, direct marketing, website sales and the like here too), do heavy promos and get evangelists for your product (e.g. people that write columns for "Wired" and the like tout the product...they get freebies way before the general public sees the item) and of course, watch out for diminishing marginal utility:) I'm sure there is more, business is pretty cut-throat, but you should have plenty here to investigate (P.S. I'm a scientist now, but I have a BBA in Accounting with a minor in Economics)

By offering something of value to the comsumer, and being innovate, and marketing thier products well. Compete, quality, price, access, availbility, selection. Apple right now in trobule in europe because Ipod does not allow from thier website to be used on other MP3 or other player devices; therefore, that situation could cost them market share because people still burn songs onto CDs to listen to in thier car, and some put it on older MP3 player if it easier to use or select songs.

Apple should spend lots on R&D and develop a highly specialized product with superior technology making it hard for Sony and Microsoft to catch up, i think they have already done that though with the i pod. Its all about product differentation, i think

Well, Apple can expand to different markets and get bigger eventually bullying the other companies out of the indusry all together. Or they can beg for mercy.
