It was on ITV late eighties early ninties. It was about two families that were divorced and the parents had married so the two families were having to get along. They lived in a big detached house and the theme tune was a really nice guitar piece....
Anyone????

Was there something called like Just Us or something along those lines? I remember something similar to what you're describing, I think it was on CITV or Children's BBC, in that slot just before Neighbours when the older kids were apparantly watching? What I'm thinking about did have a guitar theme tune.
If you can remember anything else about it it might ring a louder bell.

It sounds like "Just Us" written by Kay Mellor.
Not much to go on in IMDb but scroll down about 3/4 of the page to "The Sarge"'s post for this quote...

{It was called Just Us and was filmed and set in Leeds and was written by Kay Mellor - who was also one of the original writers for Children’s Ward along with Paul Abbott.
It was about a large stepfamily and one of the most memorable storylines was the relationship between two of the stepsiblings.
If I remember correctly, it had quite a cult following and just like a lot of children’s drama series from the 80’s/90’s it dealt with some quite adult themed issues.}

If it's what I'm thinking of it was called Just Us and it was based on the American programme Step by Step (oh no, now I've got the theme tune to it in my head - I'll never get to sleep now!!!)

The Upper Hand! With...Charlie McGann? The Guy character played a working class cleaner and the lady was his boss, I think her name was Caroline. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Upper_Hand
