I have to watch alot of films for my dissertation and cannot find all of them in rental shops. Ones whick allow you to watch the film in its entirety and not just clips.
Many are older more obscure films. As many websites would be good.

Try the British Film Institute. They do a lot to restore old films.
If you subscribe to Sky Digital, you could sign up for the broadband movie download thing they do...

You can try www.peekvid.com, but I think those may be newer movies. Check them out though - they have quite a bit!
