It's a matter of eliminating the the corrupt, inefficient middle-man (politicians).

Shouldn't taxpayers have the ability to alot at least a portion of their own taxes to what would be considered debatable laws and issues. For instance, if someone doesn't approve of abortion, they shouldn't be forced to subsidize abortion clinics and vice-a-versa.

What if taxpayers had complete and direct control of ALL their taxes, totally eliminating the need for red tape politicians? Wouldn't this create an enitrely populist society, where citizens no longer have to worry about how their taxes are being spent?

The only way this idea would work is if you had a society that kept informed and cared more about society than their own personal interests.

The US society does not keep informed, are generally misinformed by the media and care more about themselves and their personal rights than whether this country prospers. This mob rule by the masses is not democracy, it's scary to give these people power. Contrary to what the media tells you, popular opinion doesn't make something right or wrong. Power can corrupt groups just as it does individuals.

Where exactly are public funds used to support abortion clinics? Your idea is aweful by the way.

sounds like a recipe for anarchy to me.

you don't want to fund abortions, i don't have kids and don't see why i should have to fund schools and those who don't have cars wouldn't see why they have to fund roads and on and on it would go.

just pay your taxes and be glad that you don't live in some scandanavian nation where taxes are well over 50%...
