I have seen this movie a million times. Mean Reds refer to the Communists.

In the novella Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote, Holly Golightly called her bouts of depression "the mean reds", and in the movie called it a feeling of being afraid yet not knowing what you are afraid of.
