This probably sounds like I'm trying to start trouble, but it is a sincere question. It so happens that for the most part, the Republicans I know are selfish, narrow minded, different levels of racist, not curious about the world, impatient, and bullying. I could go on. So I'm really asking for some examples of people who contrast those things who are actually Republican.

Elise, you're right, I know I am generalizing. I truly am looking for perspective, which is why I asked the question.

The most frustrating thing for me is that almost without exception, the my Republican friends have passionate opinions but *do not acutally keep informed* about the serious issue they're discussing. Again, I'm looking for examples of the opposite - I know I'm skewed.

Robert, I'm not that clever. My question is sincere. I used to like Dennis Miller - what the hell happened? Really, tell me about some great Republicans, I want to know.

Thank you, elle - even the way you answered is a good example of what I am asking - I do not want to stereotype 1/2 the people in our country and am trying to stop doing it. You seem like a smart, reasonable person. ;0)

I would say the majority of Republicans I know fall into that category. It is easy to find just as many selfish, narrow-minded, racist, disengaged, impatient bullies with the Democratics, as well as the Independents and non-committed individuals. I think what you just described are mostly ugly human traits, not necessarily associated with one party or the other. I am a registered Republican, myself. I have my own beliefs, but certainly don't categorize anyone else for theirs. I have a lot of gay friends, friends of all races, I travel the world extensively and volunteer with several charitable groups promoting diversity. About 50% of my friends are Republican, the other 50% are Democrats. I think they are all very kind, generous, open minded people. It is unfortunate that the Republicans you know happen to be jerks...I know a few myself. On the other hand, I also know a lot of Democrats who are jerks, as well. Like I said, I think it is more the individual than the party they belong to. Hope this helps.

To be honest with you, I'd just say you were just as bad as your own generalization. Stop talking politics, get to know the person as a friend, and then talk politics with an open mind. Ask the Republican why it is that they are Republican. Believe it or not, you'll find out some very interesting things. This is also the only way you are going to find you like someone who's a Republican. Lord knows, I could start with generalizations about Democrats, but this wouldn't be cool, would it. I feel the heart and look to the mind, not the taxes or whether or not the person believes in abortion. We're all different, you should embrace the fact we aren't all the same, thank God. The world would be a boring place...

Every republican I've met is generous and open minded and most are very intelligent. I've even met democrats who are pleasant and a few who are actually intelligent. ;-)

I'm more in the middle, but I suspect you're a closet bigot.

Try to be more open minded and less prejudice towards others. You'll get along with people better if you're more tolerant and understanding of the diversity of thoughts and beliefs.

My coworker is a 100% Bush-supporting, way-to-the-right
conservative-Republican!
She knows how much I despise Bush and on the day after his state of the union address, we rib each other all day long about it; good-natured fun!
My coworker believes Bush can walk on water and I believe he is full of it!
Yet, she is one of the sweetest people I know!
There are others like her and many others like me on our job and we all get along like one, big happy family!
We all appreceiate each other and we all thank God that we're not all alike; because life would be too boring otherwise!

I have a few Republican friends who have those good traits, but the only way we keep our friendships intact is to not discuss politics. If we do, the nastiness can get think both ways!

Yes, but not all of the above at once, and most if not all are also terribly ignorant by their own choosing. It is easier that way you know. And it leaves them more time to count their money and think up ways to further pollute our environment. Critical thinking takes time and effort, and for some reason they have an aversion to that.

my parents are the kindest, nicest people i've ever met. i don't just say that because they're my parents- i say it becase they'd literally give you the shirt off their backs. (obviously they're Republican.)

i know plenty of people from both parties who are great people. i must say however, that all the racist people i know are democrats. i really really mean that. i'm married to a black man, so i have occasion to know.

there's plenty of people i know who are just assholes, as well. it doesn't pay to try to class people according to their party.

Yes, actually I do especially one who has been my friend since Kindergarten. His only faults are probably overdoing things, and being almost to nice.
