Something new may be like a toy or it may be something that sparks our imagination. Maybe we get used to the thing and then we focus on other things that are happening, so that it no longer occupies us as it once did. Maybe we have to rediscover that thing, which I believe is possible, in order to continue to appreciate it.

There was an article in the recent O (Oprah) magazine - "Why is it so darn hard to change?" - and it bascially said that the chemical dopamine is raised in the brain whenever we experience pleasure. That is one reason that certain behaviors such as drug and alcohol use can become addictive (these raise the level of dopamine). Dopamine is also released when we receive a reward of some kind. But studies have shown that the more often the reward was received the less activity the brain showed.

If you can find the O Magazine with Oprah dressed in white on the cover (within the last two months) the article would answer your question more thoroughly.

Best wishes!

It does feel nice when I get something I need & occasionally something I want, but maybe people who're overly materialistic measure their worth by their material belongings. However, the old cliche 'money can't buy happiness' still stands, so when the 'new' wears off the person is right back where they started.
