Oxygen and nitrogen make up the Earth's atmosphere. The layers are troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere and in the stratosphere, there is the ozone layer which absorbs ultraviolent radiation rays from the sun. The exosphere slows asteroids down from hitting Earth at all or somewhat slower.
