Not nearly enough information for an answer. but the most likely culprit is not enough ram.

Because chances are that if your computer had Windows 98 for a good reason.......It doesn't have enough RAM memory!

Either your PC has a slow CPU, it lacks resources in general, so by installing Windows XP you have made it worse rather than any better.

Your computer won't run faster just by installing a "superior" operating system. Windows XP needs and uses alot more resources than Windows 98 did, so you have a slow CPU, not enough memory, a slow video card, and you decide to go and install Windows XP.....of course you will see that computer is slower, and believe me it is, ...due to the lack of more resources.

Everytime Microsoft creates a new Windows there is a challenge, you need more RAM, you need a faster processor, you need more resources. - That's the catch, they don't care you have to go ahead and buy more hardware to make the new toy work, but if you want to play with the toy, you have to pay the consequences of having to get more memory, faster CPU, more hard disk space.

Go back to Windows 98, or get yourself a newer computer, that's the best you can do.

I hope this helped.

Put an old guy in a Corvette and the Corvette will be slow....same principle applies here...

In reference to "sm bn"

Windows XP will run on as little as 64 mb of RAM...I know...i have done it before but i had to turn most of the services off in order to maintain functionality. I upgraded that same rig to 192 mb ram and put a 32mb video card in it... and it GREATLY improved my capabilities.

That rig ended up as this...

Intel Celeron 466
192 MB PC100 RAM
32 MB ATI Radeon 7000 PCI
10GB HDD 5400rpm
Windows XP SP1 with 100% of my services on....

Now I would recommend this....if you are planning on keeping this computer alive....

1. Make sure that you have adequate video capability....if you don't have a dedicated video card...get one....this will help free up some system RAM.

2. Install the Maximum amount of RAM that your computer will hold. You will need to look at the specs of the motherboard to find out the exact amount and type that you can put into your computer.

3. Disable Unnecessary Services. The more services that you have running the more resources will be used.

4. Run Windows XP in classic mode. It will look like windows 2000 but have all the functionality of Windows XP without using all the resources that the Luna interface uses.

Windows XP demands much more hardware resources than Windows 98.

Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx
to know the minimum hardware configuration to run XP. Check if your computer has a better configuration (more RAM, a better CPU, etc.).

Hi Diana:

It's hard to know the precise reasons without more details, like the size of your processor, the RAM that you have installed, your hard disk size, etc.

However, in general terms, the amount of computer resources that are needed to run XP are far higher than WIN98. If your computer was made years ago, and came with WIN98, it probably has just barely enough resources to run XP.

The processor is getting more load put on it, the RAM may not be high enough, and the system is using secondary storarge (like your hard disk) to do memory paging back and forth.

If you can provide more details on the size/speed of your computer, how much RAM it has installed, etc... I am sure you can get suggestions on how to speed it up. One obvious suggestion, add more RAM, if you can.

I hope this is helpful.

Lot of things.

You may need to defrag your computer.

You may need more memory or Ram for your computer.

You man need to do a virus scan. Picking up a data logger virus will slow down your computer.

You have an old computer and it can not handle the windows xp

For the big 10, send me your computer model and I will tell you exactly what to do then.

I think there must have some regsitry errors in you PC to slow it down.
You need to try a registry cleaner to clean you PC.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer you create junk in the registry. You need to scan and clean your PC with registry cleaner. It is a powerful and useful tool to elinimate to the clutter and junk that builds up in your PC's registry from installing and removing programs, creating and deleting files and surfing online.Without regular system tune–ups, it's very likely your computer will slow, crash, full of error messages, leaving you with a costly computer–mechanic bill and lost data.
There are some comparison and review of registry cleaners

You can download and scan your PC for free.

this is not a good practuce

Befire upgrading you have to check whether your PC has enough RAM and HD space

XP need 1 GB while Windows 98 is happy with 256 MB

So most likely is you are not realistic in upgrading

Windows XP needs a lot more memory than 98 my guess is that you dont have enough memory, also XP needs more space on your hard drive you may be low on space on your hard drive, solutions is to install more memory your need a least 512mb of memory and to install another hardrive or clear some usless stuff off your existing hardrive by doing a drive cleanup, it might be worth doing a disc defrag as well.

Most likely because your system hardware is from the Win98 era and is not up to the challenge of running XP.

Does your computer have the minimum Disk space requirement to install Windows XP? -- Maybe your hardrive is not big enough? or... your processor....is too slow? Check the minimum requirements to install Windows XP.
