Regarding "The Dark Horse" it is by Marcus Sedgwick for ages 9-12, or grades 6-10.
Here is a review from Amazon:
From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. In ancient Britain, the coastal Storn tribe must face the onslaught of the violent invaders known as the Dark Horse. The story is told in part through the perspective of 16-year-old Sigurd, who describes current and past events, and in part through a third-person narrative. Five years before the story begins, the Storn took in a foundling, a young girl they named Mouse for her shy ways. Later a mysterious stranger, bearing a box with magical powers, approaches the Storn. His coming, which brings death and confusion to the people, is the catalyst for the revelation of Mouse's real identity. His arrival is also ultimately responsible for Sigurd's becoming leader of the Storn, a role that requires the young man to rally his people against the violent attack of the marauding enemy. Although the splintered telling may confuse some readers, and the novel isn't as strong as Henrietta Branford's The Fated Sky (1999), the book will still find a solid readership among historical fiction fans, thanks to the fast pace, hint of magic, and satisfyingly enigmatic conclusion. As the previous post said.....Mates, Dates series by Cathy Hopkins. Absolute perfection. I've read almost every single one and just finished reading the last one in the series today! It's the perfect series for younger teens. It's about three girls who live in North London. The narration of each book jumps from one girl to another. Later on in the series these 'mates' eventually adopt another girl into their circle of friends and help her in adjusting to being a growing teenager. They touch different aspects of being a teenager, from boys, to body image, friendships, relationships, parents, school and future careers! They cover many topics flawlessly with humor. Some other books are : A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter and Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. Good luck!

Try Tamora Pierce of Robin McKinley. They write fantasy novels with strong female characters - I love them. For a 12-year old, I'd recommend:

Pierce: The Immortals series (4 books)
McKinley: The Hero and the Crown
The Blue Sword

King Fortis the Brave about a pair of twins (who are twelve-year-olds themselves) that find themselves transported to a magical world where they get caught up in a battle for control of the land. It's full of adventure and humor, doesn't have anything objectable in it, and most importantly has a couple of real strong female characters that your daughter will be able to identify with. I've used it in my classroom with great success and have never had a student who didn't love it!

The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby by Charles Kingsley.

This is an enchanting story especially for a twelve year old girl.

Adios to My Old Life by Caridad Ferrer is about a young girl who enters an American Idol-style contest--if she likes music or American Idol, she'd probably really enjoy this one.

Or if you have time, Theodosia Throckmorton and the Serpents of Chaos by R. L. LaFever is coming out in April, and is a fantasy adventure taking her from London to Egypt.

Try the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Also, I adored the Anne of Green Gables books by L.m. Montgomery when I was her age. I still have my set and intend on giving them to my daughter around that age. Good luck.
