they died right? where did their bodies go then?

Among the things that are not explored in depth in the two shuttle disasters are the condition of the bodies. Pieces of the bodies in the Columbia were found scattered across East Texas, just like pieces of the shuttle. They were identified with DNA. It is likely that the crew of Challenger was alive, though probably not conscious, when the shuttle hit the water.
If I had not had earphones on while standing at the bus stop, I might have heard the boom and looked up as it went right over my head here in Dallas.

Yeah, they died. It's pretty gruesome, actually, I believe their bodies were blown to pieces just like the shuttle. They never said much on the news about finding their bodies, but I do remember they found a sneaker.

Their bodies didn't go anywhere. They were burned to ashes in the atmosphere.
