I want to teach myself how to play the bass?

buy a bass and listen to some music and then read the tabs and try to play it. start with easy songs.

You need to play with other players if possible. The beginning is most difficult part.

Go to www.YouTube.com and type in "how to play the bass" and you'll see tons of free videos on how to do it.

My advice is that you learn by playing along with a song that you like that has an easily recognizeable bass line once you get familiar with it. It's just going to take practice.

I can tell you that the bass usually plays along with the drummers bass drum or provides a steady rhythm for the guitarists. Many bass players play right along with the guitarists. It's all a matter of taste.

Go to www.911tabs.com to find tabs to your favorite songs, too. They will show you where your fingers should go and how to hit each string.

First . ...buy a short-scale bass guitar . They are easier to learn because the neck is shorter and the frets are closer . Then you need to talk to someone who plays , and get some " Do-IT-YOURSELF ' lessons on CD . You will probably need a Digital Tuner , too. Start by listening to retro punk bands like The Ramones, Sham 69 , or The Riverdales . You will most likely need some help from an older person that has been playing for some time . He or she can show you the basic RUNS , which are standard patterns used in many songs .
