America's major exports is: armaments, heavy equipment (though this is declining), debt instruments (like bonds and treasury notes, farm commodities, and good paying jobs.
Our manufacturing base is gutted and good paying IT jobs have mostly gone overseas...and our politicians keep two sets of books. We see the creative accounting one. The only people making big money are the CEOsand stockbrokers. MSNBC had an article that said ordinary workers have to work more than a year to make the money that the average CEO makes in ONE DAY! That's why the gap between the haves and the have nots has gotten wider than when the robber barons ruled this country in the late 1800's early 1900's. But hey, at least there are still jobs at Safeway and McDonalds for all those aerospace engineers and retirees.

* Yes, the US exports lots of things: the US IS THE NO. 1 EXPORTER IN THE WORLD -- more than China, more than Japan -- with nearly $1 trillion in exports. (Does that surprise you?)

* No, there is absolutely nothing wrong with importing more than we export. Why should there be? Do you sell as much stuff to the grocery store as you buy from them? America has run a trade deficit for most of the past 400 years into colonial times.

What are some of the millions of things we export? Agricultural products, entertainment (Hollywood movies), financial services, software (you've never heard of Microsoft? Apple?), microprocessors (Intel, AMD), cellular phone chips and infrastructure etc (Qualcomm, Texas Instruments), market research, IT services, Internet services (Google, Yahoo) .... it's a pretty long list guy.

We export just about everything you can think of. Food like corn, grain, oats, soybeans, meat, vegetables, fruits. We export autos, although not too many. Aluminum and specialty steels. Computers and related equipment. Paper. Hard woods for furniture. And on and on.
We do import more than we export, thus the trade imbalance.
