This question is for people who have had experience with different roommates. Is it rude or unusual for a new roommate to stay in their room all the time, even if the person is polite and nice when they pass you in the house or in other places? Or are some roommates like this all the time, even after sharing a your place a few months?

Some people are just like that. I was like that. Some people are truly introverts. If they don't seem particularly depressed, just let them be like that and look to outside friends if you feel like you need company.

No, this person could be just an introvert. I'm like that too, but I socialize. They may like to be by herself most of the time, but that doesn't mean that they should be by herself. Try to invite them places to get to know and meet other people. Or suggest groups they should join so they will not have a reason to be in the room all the time.

As long as it's a good roommate (pays bills on time, no wild parties, no extreme noise at all hours of the night) I wouldn't complain.

I'm a new roommate (1st year soph) and I have no friends and I always sit in my room. But I am seeing a psychiatrist for acute depression.
