christianity appeals to the gullible and ignorant, so the bulk of americans must fit into those categories for it to be so popular - which isnt surprising, considering who they elect

I found this :
**No other single influence has shaped America more than Christianity.
North America, particularly what became the United States, was settled by a variety of peoples, each bringing their local church, making the US a Christian pluralist society, with no state church. In particular the Anabaptists moved over in large numbers, and the vision of America as a virgin continent gave rise to new, ‘primitive’ versions of Christianity, attempting to recreate older models.
Religion became a private choice rather than a state imposed rule.
The large-scale importation of Africans through the slave trade to work in the plantations of Southern North America and the Caribbean meant these new Afro-Americans also adopted Christianity.**

Our "Four Father's" founded and built this country on Religion. The "Pilgrims", came here in "Peace" because they were Christian's......that's the reason for the "Thanksgiving Feast", was to show the Indians they came in "Peace" and God is about "peace" and Love, and the Trinity........ Our Four Father's were perfect examples of how our country should still be ran.... These Presidents today, need to learn a thing or two, from the President's before them, "Our Four Father's." Religion was apart of the "American Way" in those days.... Even up into the 60s, and then it slowly started to dieing away, except for a chosen few too many that are still "On fire for God"...... Its sad, but true!! They eventually even started to trying to take prayer out of the schools, and in some school's states, the "Pledge of Allegiance" as well..... I remember, the Christian's attorney going to the Supreme Courts fighting to get prayer back into our schools.....How sad that he even had to do such a thing!!! So, yes it all started with the "Pilgrims" and then our "Four Father's".

Most of the United States was founded by Christians. They were looking for religious freedom early in colonial times. The Pilgrims were one such group. They left England and settled in Holland for awhile, but the leaders were afraid that their children were being influenced too much by the Dutch, so they left Holland and went to the New World. They eventually settled at Plymouth in 1620.

First off I would like to respond to christy's answer by saying its "forefathers" not four fathers. The country, yes, was founded by Christians but the government was founded by men deemed as radicals at the time who were forming a new type of government based off of the radical writings of Thomas Hobbes, john Locke, and Rousseau. In this government, a clause was state in THE CONSTITUTION of a separation of church and state so the citiznes could choos teir own religion and that religion would not be a factor in making decisions for the state. So how did christianity become popular in the United States Well there was no other option was there. There were no Muslims, very little Jews, hence leaving only Christianity as an option and the Immigrants were coming from Christian nations. Through the course of American histroy there where were peiods of Great Awakenings like the one were having now which have revitilizeed the Christian base. Also I forgot to mention the use of violence by killing athiests by caliming them to be witches, slaughtering native Americans and importing slaves. The Native Americans were mainly killed becuase they were deemed an inferior race and were given respite only if they converted to christianity. Of course only the weakminded and the shunned gave up their customs to join chirsitinaity. An interesting note as I conlclude this answer that no native american who was capture by the americans decided to stay in civilization whilst every documented american who had ran away to indian civilization preferred to stay in indian civilization and continued to try to escape to Indian civilization.

In Europe, the main religions were Catholicism, and Anglican (the Church of England) If I remember correctly, the Puritans that came to the Americas on the Mayflower were from England, and were escaping the persecutions of the Anglican Church. The people who started the colonies were mainly Christian, which passed down to their children and spread in the same way.

Christy is a prime example of why Christianity is so popular in the states. Thick as pig droppins. Also the fact that the puritans settled there because they couldn't peddle their hate in europe.
