The acknowledged first professional team was the Cincinnati Redstockings in 1869. They paid their players out in the open rather than "under-the-table" as teams had done before then.
It was 1869; I remember the 100th anniversary of professional baseball in 1969.

The first entirely proffesional team was the Cinccinatti Red Stockings, not to be confused with the modern day Reds; the two are not even related. The team won over 100 games in a row before losing to a local team and disbanding. They played a loose schedule which amount to a barnstorming tour.
The first proffesional baseball league was the National Association founded in 1870, NOT 1876, the National League was founded in 1876 after the older league collapsed. This website is already on the page you need to find a list of the teams involved in baseball's original major league.(You do have to scroll down to nearly the bottom of the web page though.)

When the National League started in 1876, there were 8 teams (I've included what those teams are now in parentheses):
- Chicago White Stockings (now the Cubs)
- Hartford Dark Blues (defunct)
- St Louis Brown Stockings (defunct)
- Boston Red Caps (now the Atlanta Braves)
- Louisville Greys (defunct)
- New York Mutuals (defunct)
- Philadelphia Athletics (defunct - no relation to the later AL team of the same name)
- Cincinnati Reds (officially defunct, though there's some argument that the current Reds are descended from them)

It's the Cincinatti Reds. They were known as the Red Stockings at the time.

That's a trick question, because if there was only one, who would they play?
