4x4 is switchable. It can be turned on or off depending on the need. Because the components are designed for "off road" purposes, the car uses an excessive amount of fuel. When the 4 wheel drive option is not needed then it can be disabled allowing fuel economy to be "normal" and the car with not have a "drag" feeling while driving.
All wheel drive is permanently enabled and designed to work for all driving applications so when the weather is good or bad, the car will drive smoothly

All wheel drive means the car will float like a boat if driven into water. 4X4 means the car will fly. What don't you get?

AWD has a center differential, 4x4 does not. Without a center differential, both front & rear driveshafts will rotate at the same speed causing binding when driven on dry pavement or other high-traction surfaces.
