I need a word that accurately describes the feeling one gets just before pitching a controversial idea to one's superior... in my case asking the principal of a catholic school to ok the formation of a gay-straight alliance.

It needs to be a good word, too, because I am writing a scholarship essay about it. My original word was trepidation but that is not the right word.

How about this: "As I mentally prepared to describe my striking plan, I couldn't help but feel spasmodic with so many hopes and fears."

I think you have chosen the best word already. Trepidation. It even feels like that when you say it.
