Adios to My Old Life by Caridad Ferrer is about a girl who enters an American Idol-style contest and falls in love.
Both MaryJanice Davidson's Jennifer Scales series (Jennifer Scales and the Ancient Furnace and Jennifer Scales & the Messenger of Light) and Serena Robar's vampire series (Braced 2 Bite & Fangs 4 Freaks) are very good contemporary paranormal romances for young adults.
Patricia C. Wrede's The Magician's Ward is basically a Regency romance with some magic and mystery in it.
The heroines in all these books are in their late teens.

bright captivity by eugenia price was my favorite romance book growing up. i first read it when i was 12, juicy but not over the top and great character development. there are also 2 books after it. The Savannah series by Eugenia are also good.
And I also Highly recommend Ann Rinaldi's books.. ANY OF THEM. My favorite was Time Eough For Drums. Cast Two Shadows was good too.

"Wuthering Heights" seemed SO romantic to me when I read it as a teen. Now it seems horrid, but it is definitely a romance.
"Tess" by Thomas Hardy is another with it's dark side.
I also read books by Daphne Du Maurier (Jamaica Inn & Rebecca), and Mary Stewart.

It may not be as juicy as you want, but Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is my favorite romance novel.
