I read that book this year in class, and surprisingly can remember it.

Okay, here's how it goes:

Miss Maudie gave Jem a big piece of pie to symbolize that he has matured and she now considers him an adult, which is why he got the large piece of cake instead of his smaller, childish slice.

I can't remember as many details as I'd like, but for help I would definitely go on SparkNotes.com and read through the summaries.
