For those of you who tend to jump to conclusions...She is not witholding it from Him, He has all-access to his son should he choose it. We were curious to know why information like that would be needed and why. It is vital information to have and also very valuable. Thank you.

The only thing a social security number is useed for when a child is small is school, taxes, and insurance. Dad can acquire the information himself and no it is not required in divorce, only who claims them on their taxes. Sis needs to go after child support and be sure the tax matter is established in court documents.

There might be a law specific to your brother's state requiring the SS number but from the rest of the issues, no, he does not need it. He cannot claim the child as a dependent, he cannot take the child care exemption, he has no reason to need the number for a divorce unless it is a state specific law.

He's trying to claim him on his taxes. The boys number is not necessary for the divorce. I'd tell your sister in law to get her taxes in quick.

There are a number of reasons he would need it. If he carries any kind of insurance on the child he needs it. If he has a bank account set up for the child (trust fund) he needs it. If he has money taken out of his paycheck put into savings bonds for the chld he needs it.

It is needed at two places
1. Tax return of both husband and wife
2. Child support payments
3. Once in a while in health insurance, and investments in child's name

In Florida, yes, I had to provide it to my ex-husband for our divorce, it has to do with child-support, and IRS claiming purposes.
