Think twice about getting a water turtle. They will eventually need tanks around 55-150 gallons, they need basking lamps, UVA/UVB lamps, a high-powered filter (mine was 150 dollars), they need land areas and water that is deep anough and long enough for them to swim in, and they will need calcium supplements and a variety of protein-rich foods ad babies and veggies as they get older. Be prepared to spend humdred if not thousands on them, and if you still want one, get one. Here is a page I made about their care. Good luck! www.geocities.com/radiofemme/turtles

Turtles hav 2 bask in the sun in order 2 maintain the health of their shells-very important.

All american freshwater turtles carry micro-organisms that r dangerous 2 humans: Salmonella & arizona. These will also b in your tnk water. If you handle a turtle w/o gloves you should make sure u dont touch your eyes, nose etc.

This is why the sale of baby turts under 2" long was banned in the 1960s. Kids thought they were cute and kissed them-as a result they picked up the salmonella & arizona.

Unless you plan on getting a much bigger tank as it gets bigger then don't get a turtle to put in that tank, some people actually use kiddie pools when they get big. You can't just put it in there and expect the turtle to be fine, they need a place out of the water to bask, which means they need a light that gives off the right type of rays to bask under. I'll add links to a few sites you should check out before you actually buy a turtle.

Do some research, talk with the fish store. Once you've done the work then get the turtle. There are too many people getting exotic pets, without knowing how to take care of them. Then when a problem arises it's usually too late.

Turtles do go in and out of the water. Tortoises live on land. Do your research on the type you want before purchasing. Have a nice day.

I have red eared sliders and they need something to be on. you also need a heat lamp otherwise there shell gets "squishy". i have a big rock, you can also your the plastic stuff with little holes and glue it in at the top of your water... make sure you have a ramp though. That way they can swim under still

They will at the very least need some place they can rest near the surface and breathe. I wouldn't suggest you add one to a 10 gallon tank in any event, they do need some special conditions and more space than that to do well.
