problem with volume control.?

i have Windows Me operating system. When i click volume icon in task bar and check mute all option, it does not work. Even i cant increase or decrease volume from there. However if i increase or decrease or mute the wave.... it works. What can i do.
PLS HELP ME IN GETTING MY VOLUME CONTROL WORKING PROPERLY.

i ahve checked its setting but still i cant get it working.

Hi. The settings for Win ME are found by using "Start> Programs> Accessories> Entertainment>" I believe. Experiment with the various inputs and outputs.
