My laptop has a trojan virus, but I'm buying a new MacBook. If I was to transfer my old files onto the Mac, can the trojan infect the Mac? I know this can happen from PC to PC, but I know Macs aren't as susceptible to viruses like PCs are.

Hello Jamie B,

No, Jamie, your Windows virus can't transfer over to your MacBook. Most viruses are Windows executable files. If you opened it up inside of Mac OS X it comes out as a simple text file. It really can't do anything to your MacBook unless, maybe, if you were to use BootCamp so that you can run Windows natively on your Mac.

Congratulations for finally considering making the switch. You won't regret it.

As far as I know there aren't any cross-platform PC-Mac viruses in the wild, although there have been proof-of-concept demonstrations. You should still get an antivirus for the Mac, though -- even if the chances of getting a Mac virus are a million times less than the chances of getting a PC one, over the course of a year you'll probably encounter them, and they've been increasing.

No. There are 'proof-of-concept' cross platform viruses, but I'm not aware of any of them existing in the wild.
I have a few virus files, one or two being trojans that have been sitting on one of my windows partitions for a while. I don't remember where I had quarantined them and I run Linux anyway so I haven't worried about finding and deleting them.
