Tracking down your pc on the internet is wishful thinking. I wouldn't put much hope in such a trace.
My laptop was stolen at my work (of all places). I hope you had a backup of the data because the chances you'll see this computer again are slim to none. There are things you should do to help track it down. First, call the police and fill out a full report. If you don't know the serial number then find your purchase records and get this number from the vendor you bought it from. I was actually surprised about the next step when it happened to me. Call the vendor you purchased the laptop from and report it stolen. Companies like Dell are set up very well for events such as these. If you ever notice that when you call for tech support they always ask you a slew of questions. There's a double reason for that. Companies are trying to match the owner registration to the serial number of the computer. If your computer's stolen and the poor sap calls for tech support then a notice comes up saying the unit is stolen. Now there's a hard trace to the caller and they call the local police right away. Most the time the person who buys a stolen unit doesn't know it's hot and may be too naive to think about the consequences of buying a CHEAP PC. That doesn't guarantee you'll be able to get your unit back but at least you'll be covering all the bases.
I still haven't gotten my laptop back but I now have one or two backups of work data on USB drives in case it happens again. The experience makes you angry and a little paranoid but you learn to be more careful the next time you buy a laptop. The laptop from my work was insured and I ended up with a better model to replace it. What hurt the most in my case was the personal settings and data that I lost. It took me months to get back to where I was.
Good Luck.

More than likely your laptop will be sold on the street or at a pawn shop for a cheap price so that the theif can make some easy cash. The only way that it can be tracked down is if the theif decided to use the computer for himself. But more than likely it was sold to some unsuspecting person in need of a good laptop for a cheap price.
There is tracking software available from LOJACK as well as a few other companies, but thats only contingent on whether or not that computer gets connected to the internet again and whether the next person who has it decides to reformat the hard drive.

Do you have the serial number? The police will want it to check at pawn shops in the area. I don't know of any other way to trace it unless you had a service agreement with the maker - if someone called into to get assistance with it, they could know it's your machine from the serial #.
Good luck, Sweetie.
