First of all, the answerer that talks about Petsmart's "vet assurance" obviously hasn't had experience with Petsmart. They denied me any reimbursement when my guinea pigs came home covered in parasites, and one with a serious respiratory illness. I covered the $500 vet bill out of my own pocket, and they waved the "14 day guarantee" at me and said they didn't have to do anything to help me, since I didn't talk to them until 15 days later (took me a week and a half to get a vet appointment!). This guinea pig required 4 types of antibiotics to treat, and handfeeding for nearly 3 months.

Go to a rescue. Their animals are healthy, already paired up, generally cheaper, and not supporting small animal mills that breed for horrid places like Petsmart.

Petsmart is the place to get small animals like guinea pigs. Petsmart has the Vet Assure thing where you can exchange for another guinea pig if it dies or if it is a bad health in fourteen days. Some Petsmart checks if the pet is in good condition before even selling it. I got mine from a garage sell but I think getting it at petsmart is a great place too.

You can ask your neighborhood if they are selling a baby guinea pig because guinea pigs can make a lot of babies. I had a friend that had a female and a male guinea pig and it made almost 50-100 babies. Of coarse, not all at once.

Local petshop or a shelter would be great too.
I'm sorry if I did not help you answer your question.

Get one from a breeder or rescue. It will be friendlier, healthier, and they can tell you about the guinea pig and his/her personality. You can look for specific colors or variarions. They also cost just about the same as the guinea pigs at the petstores, and sometimes less.

I'd try a pet shop, that way you can ask how long they've been in the shop. Pet shops usually get the animals from a breeder so they're only young. Also they keep them in for a day so they can check for any illnesses.
Also, there's breeders or a rescue center.

You could get one from someone off Craigslist or go to local pet store.
