yes they could be contractions def you need to start timing them and if you get less than five min apart and they are consistent then you need to call your docter or go to the hospital.

Sharp pains do not sound like contractions dear. I think that you should be addressing these worries to your doctor. I am sure that you have a number to call with questions of this sort.
I wanted to say I am sorry that you were subjected to the ignorant comment of that first person, I reported him. I really wonder why someone like that is even reading questions of pregnancy? Weird.
Take care and I hope you feel better and get some answers to your problems.

In my expierence the pains are more dull pains then sharp. But it could very well be. I was dialted 4 cm for a month before i had my daughter and 3 cm for 2 weeks with son before i had to be induced because of low fluid. So good dialtion doesnt always mean impending labor, but it very well could be too. I hope everything works out. =)

I have had 4 kids. None of my contractions were a sharp pain. They were all a dull ache. Perhaps it is a round ligament spasm or something else.

They don't sound like contractions. I think if they were you would know it. I'm due Monday and have had the same things..and well nothing yet. I'm also 4cm dilated and lost my plug on Tuesday...NOTHING YET. I think once you start getting labor contractions you'll definatly know.

I believe they are called, "Braxton Hicks" (sp) With you starting to dilate they could be true. Until your water breaks, they will just send you back home. Congratulations.

Every woman is different, but labor pains are generally like strong menstrual cramps, whether in front or back. Is there any bleeding? I would recommend you call your Dr. and take his/her advice
