Nandhi is often referred to the mount of Lord Shiva - The bull. But actually, it refers to Lord Shiva himself. And the bull is called Rishaba Devar. Thirumoolar in his text Thirumandhiram refers Lord Shiva as Nandhi. It can be found in his very first song that is in praise of Lord Ganesh. "...Nandhi Magan Thanai..." (means son of Nandhi (Lord Shiva))

Nandi is a cow which is worshipped in India. It is the official means of transport for Lord Shiva. Most Lord Shiva temples will have the statue of Nandi in the entrance. Nandi is a symbol of piousness and power.

Nandi was Shaka Zulu's mother, but there could be others.


EDIT: A quick survey of wikipedia indicates that there are a few Nandis: Shaka's mother, a bull that Shiva (a hindu god) rides and a couple of ethnic groups, among others.

in hindu mythology different gods have deifferent creatures as their vahanas(divine vehicles).

nandi is the divine vahana( divine vehicle) of lord shiva.

nandi is a bull. it is a disciple of lord shiva also called a shiva gana..

in all the siva temples nadi the bull has a special place in front of the lord.

it adorns the special place before the main sanctum sanctorum of the lord shiva's temple.

and when one goes to the temple they see the lord from between the horns of nandi which is considered very auspiscious.
