We've had two different front load washers: the Maytag Neptune, which we bought when it was first introduced in 1997, and now the LG Tromm Steamwasher. Love them both. They use much less water than a top loader and are kinder to clothes as well. Both the Neptune and the LG have "hand wash" cycles, which are even gentler than the gentle cycle.
No, you don't need to buy the matching dryer. There's really no need to, if you don't mind having mismatched appliances. Consumer Reports had a good article about washers and dryers in a recent issue.

Pros: You can wash more at one time and save on water and energy with a new dryer, which is worth the cost. You want the larger capacity dryer if you have a larger capacity washer.
Cons: Make sure you can level and stabalize the washer as the spin cycle may shake the whole house. It will be better stabalized without the pedestals, but also lower to the ground.

Nearly ALL washing machines sold in the U.K. are front loaders.
I, personally have never had aproblem with front loaders.
However, if you are contemplating getting a washer/dryer combo,
remember that the load of washing you put in to the machine, WILL NOT be able to dry ALL of it. You will have to take some of the weight out. Therefore reducing the amount you can launder.
Much better to get a separate dryer, realistically doubling the amount you can launder in a day.

No, you won't save enough with a new dryer to make up for the cost. Front load washers are much more efficient in terms of evergy use than top loaders.

I have had a front-load washer and dryer for about 3 months now, and I absolutely love it! Yes, you can wash more clothes per load.

My sister likes hers but she was surprised and disappointed that she needed to change her favorite wash soap to a special front load soap.
