Depends on whether or not you want to grow your Maple (Acer) in a pot, in the ground or as a bonsai.
Most Japanese maples like loamy soil and a bit of shade. They're not too expensive from a garden centre or big store. At this time of year you can often pick up a bargain, as the big stores want to move the naked trees from last years stock before the new stock arrives.
Protect Acer palmatum varieties from hard frost and wind and give them a good mulch around the roots. Leaf mulch (composted leaves) is possible the best stuff for this purpose. If you haven't got much room, bag up some dry fallen leaves and stand them out of the way for a year to rot down.
This might help:

If you haven't got one, buy or borrow a good book on gardening that includes tree planting and cultivation techniques.
Hope that helps and enjoy these beautiful trees.
P.s. If you get one and the leaves go all scorchy and dry, this doesn't necessarily mean it's dead. Always give it over winter to recover and don't let it dry out completely in a pot for prolonged periods.

Where I live Japanese Maple seedlings come up on their own from the fallen seeds. Almost all Japanese Maples are incredibly beautiful, so they are worth preserving. But the best cultivars will probably not sprout from the seed true-to-form. So for the unusual leaf colors, leaf shapes, and habits, you should buy a labeled and named cultivar from a nursery. They are more expensive than other trees because they grow very slowly, but they are worth it.
