If there was some kind of tool for lighting them what were they called?

There were a number of ways to light and "snuff" the candles on high chandeliers, along with replacing the candles that burned down.

In the matter of simply lighting and snuffing the candles, a long pole was often employed, with either a candle attached to end for lighting, or a "snuffing bell" for extinguishing the candles.

In some instances, the chandelier was lowered to light or replace the candles, though it was not the preferred method, as it could be time-consuming and possibly noisy (usually these chandeliers were attended by house-servants whom were expected to keep things as quiet as possible).

These were generally used with a dumb waiter system so they could lower the chandelier, light the candle, and then raise it again. The candles were also very large to last a longer time.

They were usually hung on rope and pulley systems. They lowered them to light the candles then pulled them back up and tied them to the wall. If you've ever seen Robin Hood, remember when he would hold the rope and let the chandelier fall and ride to the second floor?

Generally these were on a rope and pulley system that allowed to lowering of the chandelier to be lit.

Also to change the candles and cleaning.

In the days of candle lit chandeliers, commonly they were raised and lowered by ropes or chains to be lit or cleaned or to replace the candles.

I'm sure the chandeliers were on a pulley system. especially if the family was wealthy. the servants could lower the chandelier to a level that was accessable for cleaning.

Two ways. As previously stated, they often could be lowered to the floor for lighting (and a ton of cleaning.) Also, they used long handled candle lighter/nuffer devices, similiar to those still used in Catholic Churches to light candles.

You should be able to buy decorative chain and matching cord by the foot to match or replace the ones that comes with the chandelier at most major hardware stores, ie Lowe's, home depot etc..
