this is really strange as i even had gone to my local police and they dont even know , but there was this person who used her ss# to get credit to fix up a house and i got a call from a lending company stating that this person whos first name is different then mine used their own ss# and it came back from transuion credit that under this other persons name but has the same last name came up my full name and address and other alias that this person was using showed up my name, as all credit companies only go by your own ss# to get your rating. how can this be possible? I have a identity thieft protection on all my credits banks an so on but this was to much as not even the three main credit companies can not figure this out. how is it possible, it scares me so much as they have already succeeded in getting monies and loans in my name, but again using their ss# when i requested to see the report all this person did was add my first name to her ss# and it came up my flies,

This is a very real problem that exists in all three credit bureaus.

You can easily challenge the report, but will have to go through the proper steps to do so, police reports, letters, etc.

It took me almost a year to get an identical incident off of my credit reports - I can tell you first hand it can be done - at no expense other than your time to follow the process as each credit reporting bureau has their own procedures.

You can also "lock your credit files" pretty easy - again this can be explained by each bureau - take the time to do this and you are better protected from this happening in the future.

This is because the credit bureau has what is called a mixed file. And yes - this happens all the time especially in family situations where a (jr,sr) is involved but is not at all uncommon with like names or when a spelling is similar.

In any case, you will want to contact the bureaus. Unfortunately to get anyone on the phone at the bureaus requires a credit report access number. You can obtain an access number by ordering your credit report. YES !!! You have to order a credit report first.

Depending on which state you live in, you are entitled to 1 free credit report from each of the 3 bureaus. Go through the report with a fine tooth comb and dispute anything and everything (including addresses and names) that do not belong to you.

Also, you may want to update your security settings at the same time. There is an option that puts a lock on your report so that no one can access it (apply for credit etc) without your permission first. You might check into that.

Good luck. Here is the site for your free reports.
