Working nights (in my experience) can reek havoc with your internal clock, regardless of how long you've been on that shift. To keep yourself out of bed all day, set an alarm like you would to wake up for work on a day shift. Give yourself at least 6 or 7 hours of sleep, ideally either right when you get home or to wake up just before you have to leave for work - with enough time to shower, etc. Most people can set your body to work on that amount if they have the willpower to gut it out the first couple of shifts.
You're not the only one! I feel into that trap for a while and it killed my 'life,' because all I did was sleep. If you kick yourself out of bed, you'll be happy you did.

Working nights goes against your normal body rhythm, I did a life-time on a three shift pattern with PPG Industries, so I know how you're feeling, I tried to keep it as routine as possible, when I finished my night-shift I bought a newspaper, had a good breakfast, read the paper through, (mimicking evening activity), then went to bed totally shattered, I always gave myself some free time however, before going to work, so that I had a life. There's no easy answer to this I'm afraid, you just have to play around with it, it's easy for people to say get a day job but that's not always possible.

Me too, I work night shift from 10pm to 6am and I also go to college full time. I know how it feels, It feels like sh**, you are not the only one.
You need to go to the doctor, you may need some vitamins to have more energy. When I work nights, I usually wake up at 2pm then I go to school.
When I wake up at 8:00 pm is because I feel depressed, I hope is not the same with you.
Go to the doctor, you are loosing your social life and you might be depressed. If you can change your job, don't think about it twice, is your health!.
I'm trying to find another job, too. Night shift is killing me.
I encourage you the same thing

Although it may seem as though you are sleeping a lot, maybe you are not getting restful sleep. Maybe your body simply does not want to adjust to you working nights, and sleeping during the day. There could be several reasons i'm sure. My fiance used to work grave yard shift and his body simply would not adjust, he was always tired and restless. Have you ever considered getting a different job, something more agreeable with your sleep schedule?

i'VE BEEN THERE !!!!! DONE IT FOR A LONG TIME... THE BODY NEVER GETS USED TO IT. THE FIRST DAY OFF IS NOTHING BUT LAYING AROUND AND TRYING TO GET YOUR MOTIVATION UP. ON YOUR FIRST DAY OFF ONLY LET YOURSELF GET ABOUT 4 HOURS SLEEP SOON AS YOU COME IN INSTEAD OF 10 TO 12 HOURS OR MORE SO YOU CAN SLEEP GOOD THAT NIGHT AND SLEEP THE SAME HOURS AS YOUR FAMILY THAT NIGHT. make YOUR SELF ONLY SLEEP THE SAME NUMBER OF HOURS THAT YOU WOULD IF YOU WERE WORKING DAYS. MAKE YOUR SELF.... THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT YOU SLEEP AS SOON AS YOU COME WHEN WORKING NIGHTS. ON DAYS YOU STAY UP FOR A WHILE BEFORE SLEEPING. BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOUR SELF SLEEP ONLY THE SAME NUMBER OF HOURS.

having worked nights myself i know that it is hard to get into a day schedule for a couple of days and go back to work on nights. another tough thing is when your friends and family haven't worked nights so they don't get how tough it is. if it is at all possible i recommend you move to a day job. there have also been health effects on those who work nights.

I do it. My days off keep the same pattern, that I sleep all day and I'm up all night. You gotta meet more night people is all, or take up an indoor hobby.
