Yes, it was likely McNaught....but there is a catch.

It was really bright, but also really close to the horizon, and only showed up in the wee hours right before dawn locally.

Meaning, if you were in an area that was even remotely urban, you missed it (glare from street lights, trees, buildings) even if you were awake at the time.

And that didn't count weather. Locally things were cloudy and overcast at my end all the way, so I missed it.

But the good thing with comets is, some of them take only a few *decades* to return, so maybe you and I will see it again sometime when we are too old and senile to remember what it is. :p *lol*

What? I'm just saying, comets are a periodic phenomenon like that. *rofl* =))

You are probably thinking of Comet McNaught, which is the brightest comet to be seen in the past 30 years. Since it far out in space, it would be seen by many people around the world at the same time.

there are many near earth objects, unfortunatly weather interferes, or you have to be in the right hemisphere, I believe in Australia (southern hemisphere) there is a comet visible whose tail was quite spectacular until recently. Google Apophis 2004MN4, that chunk of rock we'll get a close look at in 2013, 2029 and possibly TOO close in 2071, but dealing with near earth objects is something our governments need to get realistic about, right now their policy is deny the threat (to prevent panic) and retreat to their refuges or a safe part of the earth when there is any coming close.
