I just bought a second-hand I-Book from a friend. It's my first Apple so I don't know all the tricks to cleaning it up for max performance.

I know it's older, but I am sure there's a bunch of things I can do to make it run faster, cleaner, ect.

I already took off all the files I KNEW could go (music, pictures, movies)

What else can I do?
Please be specific, because as I said, I'm new to Macs, and am re-learning to walk here.

Here are the specs:

10gigs
500 mgh
G3
I-book

Thank you so much for your help

Hello Jcasting,

Congratulations on your new/old iBook. That sounds really cool. One thing that I'd like to suggest to you is to check and see if there's a Macintosh Users Group in your local area. These guys would be a big help to you. Also, there's plenty of Macintosh books out on the market that explain the hardware and software nicely.

Are you using Mac OS X? If so, what version? I think that the latest version is 10.4.8, but the older versions are very good too. I know that a G3 is one of the older PowerPC processors, but 500 MHz is still pretty good for an older Mac.

My old 400 MHz PowerMac still does a good job for me at the printshop where I work. Usually more RAM will vastly improve your Mac's performance. Also, if you're using Mac OS X, go into the System Preferences settings. Under the Hardware heading the Energy Saver, there is an Optimization setting so that you can get optimum performance. It might cause the battery to drain faster though.

I hope that this helps.
