So, I am filling out a job application and would like to include a resume. I am a freshman in College, and undecided as to what my major is. I am classified thru the University as undeclared, but am leaning towards English. So, I guess this is a two-part question....what should I put down on th eapplication as my major? Will undeclared or undecided look bad? And if I put that down, what do I put for objective....help!

I read the answers to your question, and they sort of missed the point.

Think this out logically.

You are a freshman in college. I would then assume you are around 18 years old, or there abouts.

Do you have any idea how many college students change their major? I don't have any statistics to back me up on this, but it's at least 75%.

The reason for this is because it's virtually impossible for a 17 or 18-year old, just starting college, to know what they are going to do for the rest of their lives.

And if you decide to take the time to look this up, by age 30 most people are not working in the specific field that their degree is in, and this is especially true for liberal arts majors.

I changed my major three times while I was in college, and once I got out, my specific degree was in marketing-advertising. And withinn 5 years I was in sales.

My point with all of this is that the person you will be interviewing knows this too. If you are 18 and you did declare a major, they know that statistically speaking, chances are the degree you graduate with will not be the one you are declaring now.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting down "Undeclared." In fact, it could be even looked upon as something favourable on the part of some employers.

And with respect to "objective," who said you had to include one?

I am assuming when you speak of an objective, you are talking about your resmue` and not the job application. Once you graduate and you are looking for a position toward your career path, then there are some rule changes with respect to how you interview and what you put on your resume`.

Right now, you are looking for a job to pay the bills while you go to college. A career objective in this situation is not that important.

If it is on the application, then tell them you want to stay with the company, and with time and experience, move up, and then upon graduation, move further into a corporate postion, or another area that relates more to the company you are applying to.

Relax, you are going to do fine!

Do you have to put down an objective on your resume? Whenever I did, I changed it for each job I applied for, but if you're just sending out your resume to many many places, I'd probably leave it out.

Does your school have a career office? Many schools will have someone who can read over your resume and help you improve it.

If you're not declared yet, I wouldn't say that you're an English major (you can mention it in your cover letter, though). That's because the potential employer may want a copy of your college transcript, and that will list you as undeclared, at which point your potential employer will figure you lied on your resume and never hire you.

Since they can check your information, be truthful in your answers on your application.

Major - Undeclared.
Objective - to obtain a position as a/an (name of position) where I can use my skills and knowledge of (name of skills/skill set).

Just a side note: As an Undeclared, consider the things you like to do and head in that direction of study. If $$ is the issue, check Salary.com to see what positions and careers offer more $$. Most importantly, if you head to English, think of what you want to do with that Major and the careers that you can go into and the $$ to be earned, having that knowledge.
