As far as Europeans are concerned, no monarchs participated in the First Crusade. The Second Crusade was led by Louis VII of France and the German king Conrad III. The Third was led by Richard the Lionheart of England, Philip Augustus of France, and Frederick Barbarossa. Besides Barbarossa all the leaders made it through alive, although Conrad fell ill and was forced to lay low for awhile.

If you're interested in monarchies during this time you might want to look into the history of what was going on in the Crusader States in the twelth century. There was always plenty going on and women had a surprisingly big part in it.

And if you're interested in crusader leaders in general, look in to Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire. He led the Sixth Crusade. Frederick was an intellectual who may or may not have been an atheist (the Pope didn't like this, as you may guess) and liked to do grotesque experiments on people. He's an interesting person, and successfully negotiated a treaty with the Muslims to allow Christians to enter Jerusalem as pilgrims, but because he was excommunicated at the time the Pope wouldn't recognize this treaty, thus voiding it.

I thought Saladin died after the end of the Third Crusade.

Emperor Frederick Barbarossa died in 1190 on the journey to the Holy Land for the Third Crusade. Otherwise, the survival rate for kings was actually pretty good.

Oh, you might like to check out Eleanor of Aquitaine as someone who was rumoured to have gotten up to no good while away on Crusade.

What you need to do is read up on the Cathars. They played an important part in the world at the time. Yet you don't hear about them.
What you seek may lie with them. Also take a close look at the strongholds they had. An there is two maps, hard to find, but on the net. They are the same yet different. There is a third out there.
Alot of secrets held hidden there.
