I have not really heard about them breaking their necks being common, but I am sure some of them do injure themselves when diving....espcecially if there is garbage or debris in the water they are diving into. I have heard about Black Skimmers (an ocean bird) that feeds by running or "skimming" their bill across the water to be known to break their bills due to being caught on trash, debris or other things that should not be in the ocean at the time they are feeding.
